Thread Name: Importance of captions

This is just me randomly posting, but is anyone else highly disappointed when they see a really great picture and realize that there isn't a caption to support it. I know that maybe pictures are suppose to be great on their own and not need words to back it up, but sometimes when I see a picture I like and I click on it, I'm really disappointed that I will never know the story behind it.

Just like at my school paper, I was always told, if you don't have the caption info then the photo doesn't really do you any good.

Keep in mind I'm still a young photographer so I still have a lot to learn. But I just wanted to know what everyone elses views on caption are! Thanks! (and I love apj!)

No, you aren't wrong. I hate to admit I hardly have any caption detail on my page on this site or my personal site. I think it has more to do with being slack than anything else. That's a sad state. At the very least we should haqve good IPTC info attached to a file.

The caption is the hook you hang your picture on. It gives context to the image, and in fact can change the whole meaning of a photo, giving it, potentially, increased power.
