San Francisco, CA, April 22, 2003 New York Times #1 best-selling authors Rick Smolan and David Elliot Cohen, the team behind some of the most successful photography projects in history ever produced events ever produced, have reunited to create America 24/7, the largest collaborative photo project in U.S. history.
From May 12-18, 2003, America 24/7 will dispatch 1,000 top photojournalists from coast to coast to create a digital time capsule of American life, 24-hours a day for seven days. Project organizers are also inviting every digital photographer in the US professional and amateur alike to submit their own visions of America via at www.america24-7.com powered by Snapfish.
Project organizers are searching for extraordinary images of every day life. At the same moment a professional photojournalist captures a fourth generation farm family in Indiana, a student will document a fisherman instructing his son in Chesapeake Bay. While a professional snaps photos of immigrants seeking a new life in America, an amateur will photograph a Mexican-American inventor who serves as a role model for his community. While a Pulitzer Prize winner explores mist-shrouded coves along Californias Lost Coast, an amateur will document a fifth-grade class cleaning up a park in Atlanta. And while President Bushs personal photographer captures tense moments in the Oval Office, a mother will snap images of her daughters valedictory speech.
DK Publishing, a visionary publisher of distinctively styled books for adults and children, will publish the results of this unprecedented photo shoot in 53 lavishly illustrated books. The flagship volume in the series, entitled America 24/7, (November 2003) will be a 304-page, illustrated book, featuring the very best work photographs from more than 2 million shot across the nation. In October, 2004, DK will simultaneously publish 52 additional volumes, showcasing each American state plus Washington D.C. and New York City. This unprecedented publishing schedule marks the largest number of books ever published simultaneously by a trade book publisher. Major network television coverage, a traveling exhibition of photographs, and a compelling online gallery will accompany publication of the books.
America 24/7 will be a landmark series in documentary photography and the watershed event of the new digital photography age, comments project director Rick Smolan, a former Time and National Geographic photojournalist. More than half the cameras purchased in America this year will be digital, and America 24/7 demonstrates that digital photography has fully entered the mainstream. Every one of the 10,000-plus images ultimately published in this project will be digital.
Our corporate partners for America 24/7 are the leaders of the new digital photography revolution added Smolan, Adobe is the only company is that offers everyone from amateurs to the worlds best photographers a complete suite of tools to build a state-of-the-art digital darkroom. And when it came to selecting a digital camera partner, there was only one logical choice: Olympus America. Olympus vision of digital photography as an empowering technology that unleashes each photographers creativity and imagination perfectly aligns with our vision behind this project. Our other partners, Lexar Media, Epson and Snapfish make digital photography easy for everyone.
Each of the one thousand professional photojournalists hired for America 24/7 will receive the Adobe Design Collection, which includes Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign and Acrobat. The pros will also be equipped with Olympus C5050 digital cameras and Lexar 512MB and 256MB CompactFlash Memory cards.
Amateur photographers whose pictures are selected for inclusion in one of the projects 53 books will receive Adobe Photoshop Elements and Adobe Photoshop Album. Photographers whose work is selected as the cover image of one the 53 books will receive, in addition, an Olympus Stylus 300 digital camera and an Epson Stylus Photo printer.
Snapfish, Americas leading online photo service, with almost 5 million members, is providing the technology behind the America 24/7 website, allowing digital photographers in every corner of America to participate simply and easily. JetBlue will transport photojournalists and photo editors from Americas top magazines and newspapers.
Smolan and Cohen, the innovative team behind the 1986 blockbuster, A Day in the Life of America the best-selling photography book ever published Smolan and Cohen hope believe their project will discover a new generation of talented digital photographers. Between us, Rick and I have created more than 30 photography books over the last two decades using film and professional photographers, commented project director David Elliot Cohen, but, with Snapfishs help, for the first time, were able to instantly receive and edit digital photographs from both professional and amateur shooters all across the country. This technology enables a democracy of imagery unlike anything we dreamed of when we created A Day in the Life of America.
